2 Chronicles 5:13The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanksto the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.” Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud.” (NIV)

Hmm… depends on what you need I guess. What area of your library are you really looking to expand?

What are you interested in at the moment?

I don’t know what I would do with 50$ from Amazon.
I might get Gordon Fee’s new Galatians commentary coming out this month or James Barr’s book on Biblical Theology or Bart Ehrman’s translation of the apostolic fathers. Maybe something in philosophy. Man it would be hard to choose.

oooh, Gordon Fee on Galatians, that’s right. I was pretty much deciding on at least James Barr’s The Semantics of Biblical Language for at least one of the books – the way books are priced any more – I can get just a couple or three at most -there are some biblical reference one’s I’d like too such as the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery or Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels but those would take up the whole card I’d probably be using the biblical imagery one weekly with preaching or at least checking it – as I typically do with the Dictionary of Biblical Theology that I have. Welp. off to amazon to browse….

Yeah the Galatians commentary has been a long time coming. I’m disappointed at it’s price though (compared to it’s page count).

I almost never use the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery. It’s kind of confusing about what it’s real purpose is and I just don’t really find it that helpful. I would like Jesus and the Gospel dictionary to round out the bunch of IVP dictionaries. I checked out Barr’s semantics book a while back but never read it. It seemed interesting but I just didn’t get around to it. But his Biblical Theology book looked really good.

Page to price ratio is key in determining what books I buy.

Brian: Hold off on the IVP dictionaries. They recently raised the prices on Amazon, and I’m sure that they’ll drop back down to around $30 in the future.

Bryan: You know, if you don’t ever use that dictionary, you could always donate it to me. ;)

I’d also like to have the OT version of Keener’s NT Background book – But then I’d also like to have Bauckham’s little treatise on the theology of Revelation the wants are huge!

Bryan tell me of Barton’s Biblical Criticism book – is it worth it? Maybe a different one? Maybe Fizmyer’s The Interpretation of Scripture: In Defense of the Historical-Critical Method (Paulist Press (May 2008))? Or some other good book on hermeneutics?

Nick:
Yeah the price per page thing is something I picked up from you. I’m willing to shell out a little more though for Fee on Galatians. At least it isn’t the price of something from Brill.

Brian:
The OT Background commentary is also one of those books that I don’t really ever use or find much use for (other than seeing some interesting parallels.) I haven’t even cracked that thing in years. Maybe you would find more use in it though.
As far as Barton I wouldn’t really say so. I really liked the first couple of chapters but I felt his solutions and way forward were kind of a let down. I would probably recommend checking it out from the Library. Mike Bird did a review on it at his blog that is worth reading. Barton spends a lot of time stressing that Biblical Criticism does not equal historical criticism. Don’t get me wrong here is a lot of great stuff in that book but I don’t know that I found it that helpful and instead it’s just a defense of Biblical criticism . Also sometimes he’s confusing and seems to advocate something one moment and then be against it the next.

As far as hermeneutics there is the recent “Hermeneutics at the Crossroads” edited by Vanhoozer. That definitely looks worth checking out. I think I might just put it at the top of my list.

Bryan, I found a guy reviewing Vanhoozer’s book at his blog The Theos Project. It looks interesting.

Any thoughts out there on Herchel’s, The Prophets?
