Our purpose in life

I was thinking about the issue of purpose (why you do what you do, etc) a bit today.   There’s lots of talk about purpose these days.  What is the purpose of your particular church?  What is your personal purpose?  What is the purpose of your business/job, etc?   What is the purpose of this class? and so on.

Without a purpose one cannot expect to accomplish much.  Many will argue that without a stated purpose you (and y’all) won’t have a focus and will have trouble being “successful.”   Even more might argue a church/business/person without a focus is a person without a purpose, and a people without vision (purpose) perish.”  If we said focus and purpose were like “having a plan” you might say “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”  For the most part, this is all too true.

I think I used to know what my purpose was.  Through this time of wilderness that we have been in for a year and half, I have been concerned that maybe it has been going on longer than it has had to go because we lost our purpose or perhaps we failed to come up with a new purpose.  That can happen though when you think you put one together but never seem to accomplish it, or after putting out so many resumes and applications only to have no responses (was this because of lack of a clearly stated purpose not communicated with passion and strength?) you can begin to lose that focus or sense of purpose.

Today, I came to the realization though that I do know what my general purpose is, and it is one that I think is for all of us and that is to Love God with all our heart, with all our mind, with all our strength and all of our soul, and to love others as ourselves.  That’s it.  That is our purpose.  Everything else is subsidiary to that main purpose.

Now as to how that is expressed, it is up to each person really whether it is through the ministry or through the market place, whether it is through overseas cross-cultural missions or “across the street” missions, no matter the profession or vocation, they are all differing ways and means of expressing our overall purpose, to love God and love others and thereby extend his kingdom and mission in the world.

as you can tell, I am a BIG mess.  🙂

blessings,

passing this along… could be pretty cool!

Faith Improvised

With the number of theological schools in the Southwest and especially in Southern California, the Los Angeles Theology Conference seems like something that should have been going on for some time already.

The first of several planned conferences is focused on Christology, and it boasts an impressive lineup.

Check out the press release from Zondervan, and if you attend, plan to grab an In-N-Out burger and some fish tacos from Rubio’s.

He moved!!

Hello all! We have new WordPress convert!! Rick is a good guy, a good small church pastor and strong biblical exegete! Add him to your blogroll and or RSS feeds! Good job Rick!

W.onderful W.orld of W.adholms

No, I haven’t moved away from Karlstad, MN, but I have moved my blog from wadholm.blogspot.com to rickwadholmjr.wordpress.com (apparently the plain old “wadholm” link was already reserved for someone else) .  WordPress offers a far more user-friendly interface for both bloggers and commenters.  As I already blog at two other wordpress blogs, I figured this was the logical move (thanks Brian Fulthorp for the push to just make the move 🙂 ).  So don’t forget to change your RSS and email feeds to my new location…or not (if you are done following my blogging adventures and you want your chance for a clean break).
